Omnitrans, which provides buses in the Chino Valley, received the Bus Safety & Security Excellence Gold Award from The American Public Transportation Association in a ceremony on May 21 in Kentucky.

Omnitrans was lauded for creating an amateur radio service to ensure the ability to communicate with emergency responders during emergency events when cellular/mobile and landline telephone services are lost.

On the safety side, Omnitrans implemented a mixture of technology, equipment and training program improvements which contributed to a 32 percent reduction in preventable accidents since 2012.

Those efforts included adding audible turn signals and new generation mobility equipment to all buses. Omnitrans is also piloting automated collision-avoidance technology.

Safety training innovations include a bus driving simulator to supplment classroom and behind-the-wheel training.
