Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after car shears off fire hydrant Monday in Chino

A Chino Police Department photo shows water spraying high into the air Monday night after a car struck a fire hydrant at Kimball and Fern avenues in Chino. The driver, a 24-year-old from Pomona, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

A 24-year-old Pomona man was jailed Monday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after the car he was driving hit an electrical box and sheared off a fire hydrant, sending thousands of gallons of water into the air.

Kelvin Alfonso Moreira was booked into the West Valley Detention Center, but was released at 2:04 a.m. today with a citation, according to county court records.

Chino police went to the southeast corner of Fern and Kimball avenues at 6:49 p.m. on a report a car struck a fire hydrant.

“They contracted (the driver) who was found to be under the influence,” said Tamrin Olden, spokeswoman for the Chino Police Department.

The driver was going eastbound on Kimball Avenue when he lost control of the car, hit the electrical box and struck the fire hydrant.
