A man and woman were arrested in Upland Monday night on suspicion of stealing a woman’s purse at gunpoint in the 12600 block of Central Avenue in Chino.

Joe Velasquez, 38, of Upland, and Clara Polanco, 36, of Fontana, were arrested at 8:42 p.m. at Euclid Avenue and Ninth Street in Upland, according to San Bernardino County jail records.

“Mr. Velasquez approached the victim while she was getting into her vehicle, brandished a handgun while taking her purse, then fled in a vehicle driven by Ms. Polanco,” Chino police said in a statement.

A witness was able to help lead Chino and Upland police to the suspects, police added.

A replica handgun, methamphetamine and the victim’s property were found during a search.

Mr. Velasquez and Ms. Polanco were booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Both are facing a single felony charge of armed robbery. Bail was set at $100,000, jail records show.
