Joan Nell (Goedhart) Tadema, 80, died peacefully in the company of her loving family on February 18, 2019 after her courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 10, 1938 in Downey, California to Harry and Alice Goedhart. She was the oldest of four sisters. Jane (Corry) Vanderham, Barbara (Henry) Struikmans, and Alice (Robert) Hills.
During her youth, she spent much of her time surrounded by her large extended family in the Artesia, California area. She grew up on her father’s family dairy, spending much time babysitting for her many cousins, which she thoroughly enjoyed. This may have been where her love for children originated. She had many fond memories of her childhood and the joy she experienced growing up around so much family. She enjoyed all that her youth had to offer and later graduated from Excelsior High School in 1956.
Joan married Charlie Tadema February 14, 1958. They had four children in the Artesia, California area, later moving to Corona, California in 1970. There, she was a supportive wife and homemaker for the family business located in Chino, California. They later divorced in 1989. She is survived by her children Alisa Boschma, Lori (Rick) Van Vliet, Glenn (Mary Alice) Tadema, and Leslie (Frank) Teunissen, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Joan was a strong believer in her faith. She was fervent in her quest for all to know the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him. She faithfully enjoyed reading scriptures, studying her Bible and sharing the good news of her Lord and Savior.
She was an extremely nurturing mother and grandmother. Generations of grandchildren were excited to see Grandma Jo. She could spend countless hours playing games or ball with her grandkids as well as reading to them and coloring with them. She was a gracious host, making sure you never went hungry and you always had a bed to stay in. Her children and grandchildren brought her tremendous joy and her love for them showed immensely.
She enjoyed the company of many and especially loved family gatherings at the beach or poolside and the many fun-filled family vacations. She loved being outdoors, working in her yard or cleaning outside…anything in that warm California sunshine. Back in her youth, she was an avid water skier and enjoyed the many boating days she spent with family and friends. Joan was true to her “Goedhart” last name. She was kind, sweet and loving to those she met.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Alice Goedhart; a son-in-law Jim Boschma; an infant grandson, Jay Boschma and grandson, Jerrod Boschma.
Joan’s “Celebration of Life” service will be held April 27, 2019 with a spreading of ashes at sea. Any who would like to attend, please contact the family.
The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Heart ‘n Home Hospice in Idaho for the tremendous care and concern they gave to our mother. Alyssa, Sophia, K’Dean, Tamara, Laura, Mallory, Janet, Tonia and Dr. Gering were all outstanding. They truly helped all of us through these last days of her earthly journey.
