The 17 people who rallied last Saturday in Chino Hills to call for President Trump’s impeachment were outnumbered by the approximately 25 supporters of the president. The event was part of gatherings nationwide asking Congress to start impeachment proceedings.

Chino residents are among the tops in the nation in repaying their credit card balances, according to a survey conducted by WalletHub. The company says Chino residents had a combined $406.3 million in outstanding debt in the first quarter of 2019 and repaid $15.6 million. Average household credit card debt was $20,618, with an average repayment of $792. This put Chino in the 99th percentile, with 100th being the best, in credit card repayment. In comparison, Chino Hills residents were in the 94th percentile, with a combined credit card debt of $418.8 million and a repayment of $16 million. The average household credit card debt in Chino Hills was $17,386, with an average repayment of $668.

Construction will happen on Carbon Canyon Road for the next several months. Chino Hills councilman Peter Rogers asked residents to be patient because when it’s all over, the road will be safer. Several projects are being completed at the same time, but the primary job is repaving. 

Chino Hills High graduate Kyle Garlick hit his first career Major League Baseball home run recently, a shot to center field to lead off the second inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their 9-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Garlick graduated from Chino Hills High in 2010. 

Chino planning commission chairman Steve Lewis and member Robert Natase have been appointed to a sphere of influence steering committee to evaluate the fiscal implications of different annexation scenarios. Commissioner Walt Pocock was named an alternate. 

A Chino Hills 2018 crime report issued by Captain John Walker of the Chino Hills Police Department revealed that robbery, rape, simple assault (a lesser form of assault), burglary, larceny, arson, and grand theft auto crimes went down while aggravated assault went up from 39 incidents in 2017 to 51 incidents in 2018. Aggravated assault is a felony that may include a weapon or intent to commit a serious crime. 

The school district and the Associated Chino Teachers met this year for several bargaining sessions but were not able to settle the contract, said the union’s president Brenda Walker.  Negotiations will resume when school starts in August, she said.

Arnold Reservoir at Tres Hermanos Ranch in Chino Hills has been placed in the “significant hazard” classification for flooding. Inundation maps and an emergency plan must be submitted to the state by Jan. 1, 2021. The Tres Hermanos Conservation Authority, consisting of Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, and City of Industry, approved an $18,000 contract Wednesday with a Sacramento engineering firm for the job. 

Responding to a recent Champion article about students encouraging their peers, Townsend Junior High teacher Jodie Noblett let us know that students Julia Johnstone and Jeff Fassbinder launched similar programs on their campus inspired by their work on the Superintendents Advisory Council’s Spark the Light of Kindness. At Allegiance STEAM Academy, student James Houston started the Be Kind Association, which has grown to include every grade level. The fifth grader recently told the school board he would be willing to share his anti-bullying program with schools.
