The chain-link fence installed in front of the former historic La Vida hot springs restaurant on Carbon Canyon Road in Brea had barely been up for a few weeks when a vehicle tore out a 20-foot section during a crash last weekend, an incident predicted by canyon dwellers who said the site has seen numerous collisions. 

Chino Hills police department rewarded Wickman Elementary School parents paying attention while dropping off their children at school with “cops’ favorite food” during a distracted driving campaign. The parents who were not engaged in distracted driving habits were given a donut.

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) will hold workshops in May and June on its 25-year plan for the region, including ideas to balance mobility and housing needs with economic, environmental and public health goals. The meeting closest to Chino Valley will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 20 at the Ovitt Family Library in Ontario. 

Chino Hills Councilman Art Bennett praised the new Boys Republic kitchen, comparing it to something one would see in a restaurant or high quality hotel. He said Congressman Gil Cisneros was blown away during a tour last weekend. “The Boys Republic really knocked the socks off that one,” he said during Tuesday’s council meeting. 

Governor Gavin Newson’s proposal to increase education funding for teachers in high demand fields were coincidently the same issues raised by teachers who spoke at the May 2 school board meeting. The district was criticized for cutting special ed classroom aides, the need to hire more speech pathologists and for considering increasing class sizes for kindergarten students whose fifth birthdays put them in younger kindergarten classes because of their more challenging behaviors, like throwing chairs in the classroom. 

More than 100 people attended Assemblyman Philip Chen and Chino Hills Mayor Cynthia Moran’s community coffee last Saturday morning at Chino Hills Community Center. 

Ontario Christian High will unveil banners for its CIF-Southern Section Division 5 and CIF State Division 3 championship girls’ volleyball team at 12:15 p.m. Monday, May 20. The Knights finished the 2018 volleyball season with a 39-2 record, ending with a 21-game winning streak. 

Summer reading programs for the Chino Hills and Chino libraries will go digital for the first time. Participants may sign up and track their reading online. Log on to obtain reading rewards, the libraries must be visited in person. 

The San Bernardino County Fair in Victorville May 25 to June 2 will lead off the fairs in the area. The Orange County Fair will be held July 12 to August 11 and The Los Angeles County Fair from August 30 to Sept. 22 

County programs that help young people prepare for the workforce, improve the health of residents, promote literacy and simplify access to public services are among the 52 that won 2019 achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo), the highest number ever won by the county. Since 2010 the county has won 336 achievement awards from NACo, which honors innovative programs that enhance services for residents.
