Benson Avenue north of Riverside Drive in Chino was opened Tuesday,  a week ahead of the date advertised after being closed for two months while the Gas Company did some pipeline repair work.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson supports SB 972, a bill that would require all schools, including private, to include the telephone number for a suicide prevention or crisis hotline on student identification cards. Youth suicide is the second-leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 to 24, according to his press release,

Charter school director Barbara Hale has submitted a third petition to open a cultural arts and science K-8 school in the Chino Valley district. Mrs. Hale, who identified herself at last month’s board meeting as a Chino native and Don Lugo graduate, heads up Sycamore Academy in Hesperia. The local school board previously rejected two petitions from Sycamore and the county education board denied one of them on appeal. 

Nikki Morales of Chino, a member of the Chino Relay for Life team Number 2, had to leave the fundraising event for the American Cancer Society on Saturday to provide support services to the Carr Fire near Redding. Ms. Morales works for the California Conservation Corps. 

The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper used Chino Hills High graduate and Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball’s name in a headline in Thursday’s edition on a story about when the Lakers would visit Cleveland during the 2018-19 season. The line, snubbing Lebron James whose home town is Cleveland, read “Lonzo Ball and the Lakers visit the Q Nov. 21.” James, one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players,  signed a four-year, $154 million with the Lakers last month after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time.
