Chino Valley is being represented at the FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in France with Ayala High School graduate Karen Bardsley as goalie for Team England, her third World Cup performance. The 34-year-old made four saves in England’s first game, a 2-1 win over Scotland. England played Argentina Friday and will play Japan Wednesday. The tournament ends July 7.
Chino Hills Councilman Ray Marquez is worried about the safety of Chino Hills residents, especially seniors, if Edison shuts off electricity during extreme weather. He found out from city staff during Tuesday’s council meeting that generators would not be able to power air conditioning at the library or community center. He asked the city manager for a backup plan.
Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario has a new name, “Toyota Arena,” for at least the next 10 years. Built in 2008, the arena off Haven has been the site of Chino Valley graduations since 2009 and is home to the Ontario Reign pro hockey team.
Dean Borders, warden for California Institution for Men, will retire July 19 after 30 years in the Corrections Department. He worked as a correctional officer at the men’s prison in Chino in his early career, rose through the ranks, and worked at the California Institution for Women. He said his goal over the last seven years was to return to the rehabilitation, not punishment, of prisoners, and raised the number of programs from 40 to 107.
A state task force committee on charter schools is calling on the California Department of Education to give broader discretion to school districts to deny charter petitions. The committee suggests the state provide standards and training to charter authorizers and enact a one-year moratorium of on-line charter schools.

Chino Hills High School graduate and Los Angeles Dodgers player Kyle Garlick recorded his first Major League baseball hit last Saturday, a one-out double in the sixth inning at AT&T Park in San Francisco. He later scored his first Major League run in that inning. The Dodgers beat the Giants, 7-2.
Of the 1,800 inmates at the California Institution for Women, half are in mental health programs, said an official at Tuesday’s citizen advisory committee meeting. The prison has a 45-bed stand-alone psychiatric facility and 19 beds for patients in a mental health crisis. The prison also contracts with Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, a 1,200-bed psychiatric hospital for people placed there by the judicial system.
