My morning paper this week was full of problems. They included "How to stop drone attacks” following the attempt to kill the president of Venezuela, gig companies such as Lyft and Uber lobbying to override California’s new ruling on contractor workers vs. employees, the hardship facing some medical insurance holders when facing major illnesses, pesticides wiping out bee colonies, the threat to competition by the AT&T-TimeWarner merge and the President fighting to get his wall built.

Life was simpler around here a century ago. All people had to worry about was whether the trains would arrive on time, whether their horses would be spooked by those new automobiles, whether their house would catch fire if the kerosene lamp used to read  after sundown would stay lit and safe, whether new people would impact the town’s resources, how long the government would protect the sugar industry with a tariff, and what to do with those immoral moonshiners that threatened community morals as well as its sobriety. Or more important, whether the kids would avoid smallpox, diphtheria and cholera.
