Police in Chino arrested a 31-year-old man April 26 on suspicion of possession of a gun and ammunition at Alicia Cortez Elementary School in Chino.

Martin Hernandez, of Chino, was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. 

Officers were called to the area of Magnolia and Carissa avenues on a report of a suspicious person near the school at 12750 Carissa Ave., west of Mountain Avenue.

“The subject had attempted to pick up two students from the school, whom he was related to, but was turned away after staff confirmed he did not have permission to take them,” said police spokesperson Tamrin Olden.  

Officers talked with the man and found the gun and ammunition. 

Mr. Hernandez was booked on $150,000 bail on charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds, felon in possession of a firearm, drug addict in possession of a fire arm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of ammunition on school grounds and a parole hold, according to the Chino Police Department.
