Football enrollment declining, but remains most popular sport

The number of high school student-athletes in California set an all-time record for the sixth straight year, according to the California Interscholastic Federation’s sports participating survey on Aug. 1. 

A total of 808,557 students participate in a CIF sanctioned activity, the survey shows. 

Football continues to be the highest participated boys’ sport while soccer slightly edges out track and field for girls sports.

“It’s encouraging to see the continued participation increase in education-based athletics,” said CIF Executive Director Roger Blake. “Our member schools are offering more opportunities for their students, which is an important part of the overall education of our youth. 

For the second time in as many years, the number of high school football players in California decreased. 

This year, there are 94,286 male football players, a 2.87 percent decrease from the 97,079 players in the 2016 season. 

There were 107,916 players in 2007 and 100,205 players in 2016. 

The number of girls playing football, however, has increased for the third year in a row. 

CIF officials said there are 469 girls playing 11-man football for the 2018 season. Last year, there were 420 players and 333 players in 2016. in 2009, there were 141 girls playing 11-man football. 

Track and field is second in boys’ sports with 56,606 athletes, followed by soccer (53,268, basketball (47,584), baseball (44, 477), cross country (32,951), swimming and diving (22,872), wrestling (22,441), volleyball (20,790), tennis (18,737), water polo (17,143), golf (10,672), oth-er sports (12,919), lacrosse (9,684), badminton (3,964), 8-man football (2,088), skiing (503), competitive cheer traditional (639) competitive cheer sport (272), softball (99), gymnastics (1), field hockey (0).

In girls sports, soccer leads in participation with 47,186 athletes. Track and field has 46,327 athletes, followed by volleyball (45,139), other sports (35,383), basketball (34,631), softball (33,400), swimming and diving (31,161), cross country (25,377), tennis (23,428), water polo (16,085), competitive cheer traditional (9,212),  lacrosse (8,880), golf (8,506), badminton (5,302), wrestling (5,286), field hockey (3,692), gymnastics (760), 11-man football (469), skiing (304), baseball (367), and 8-man football (27).
