Chino Hills High sophomore Jacqueline Duarte began the next step towards her goal of winning a state track and field championship Friday night by competing in the girls’ 1,600m preliminaries at the CIF State Track and Field meet in Clovis. Championship races for all track and field events will be held today (May 25) at Buchanan High.

State preliminary races were held after Friday after the Champion’s press time.

Duarte, a four-time CIF-Southern Section champion in three different events, entered the state track meet with the fourth fastest time after running a 4:50.46 at last Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet at El Camino College in Torrance.

Only Mayfield High’s Audrey Suarez (4:45.04), Great Oak’s Fatima Cortes (4:45.41) and Healdsburg’s Gabrielle Peterson (4:48.54) topped Duarte’s time entering state competition.

Last season, Duarte finished second in the state preliminary race at 4:49.32 and placed third in the championship race at 4:44.87.

Ayala High senior Mikaela Ramirez ran her final high school race of the season last Saturday, placing 10th in the girls’ 3,200m at the Masters Meet.

She will attend Indiana University in the fall.
