The Ayala High football team finished with a 5-3 record and reached the quarterfinals of last weekend’s Bonita High’s 7-on-7 passing Air Assault tournament in La Verne.
Twenty-four teams took part in the two-day event.
Diamond Ranch of Pomona defeated Upland High in the championship game.
Culver City beat Muir in the consolation title game.
Ayala finished 3-2 in pool play on Day 1 with wins over San Gabriel, Muir and Charter Oak and losses to Corona Santiago and Upland.
The Bulldogs started bracket play last Saturday with a 20-0 win against Western Christian and a 32-26 victory over Northview. In the quarterfinals, Ayala fell to Valencia, 26-0.
Diamond Ranch defeated Valencia, 30-18, and Upland beat Monrovia, 32-8, in the semifinals setting up the title game.
Other teams in the tournament were Arroyo, Pasadena, Montclair, Damien, JW North, Paraclete, Bonita, Los Altos, Arcadia, Bishop Amat, Glendora, Hart and Culver City.
Battle of the Bone game date change
This year’s annual Battle of the Bone football game between Ayala and Chino Hills high schools has been pushed back one day to Saturday, Aug. 24, confirmed Ayala High athletic director Warren Reed.
“There is a shortage of officials (referees). This was asked by our CIF liaison and both schools have agreed to the date change,
Mr. Reed said Monday.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Ayala High, 14255 Peyton Drive in Chino Hills. Last season, Ayala broke its eight-game losing streak in the series with a 14-10 win.
