At Tuesday’s Chino City Council meeting, Police Chief Karen Comstock responding to several parents' complaints, apologized to St. Margaret Mary Catholic School for her department not putting their campus on lockdown March 21 following the fatal shooting of a Montclair woman at the shopping center north of the school. The department has offered to do safety training at the school. Walnut Avenue Elementary, just east of the shooting site, had put their after-school program on a “shelter in place” status until the crime scene was secure. 

Chino Mayor Eunice Ulloa said Tuesday night she wanted to “go on record about the chit chat that’s going around” that other council members are under her control. She said members do their own research when making decisions. Asked later about the source of the chit chat, she said she preferred not to comment. 

Some Chino Valley residents were awakened at 5:06 Wednesday morning by a 3.5-magntitude earthquake centered five miles southeast of Yorba Linda. No damage was reported. In 2008, an earthquake in Chino Hills measured 5.5, causing minor damage. Seismologists said this week California is in an “earthquake drought” by not having a quake measuring higher than 6.0 in many years. 

Chino and Chino Hills police departments will conduct specialized patrols during April “distracted driving awareness month.” Chino Police will conduct specific enforcement on Wednesday, April 10 and Friday, April 12. Chino Hills police plan to conduct its enforcement throughout the month. 

Chino Valley Fire District will conduct an emergency medical services training at Ayala Park in Chino from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12. Chief Tim Shackelford said he does not want the public to be concerned about the number of fire vehicles gathered at the park. 

Lonzo Ball, Chino Hills High graduate who is a point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, is suing a part owner of Big Baller Brand claiming Alan Foster embezzled more than $1.5 million from the company and Mr. Ball’s personal finances. Lonzo, a 51 percent owner of Big Baller Brand, has since covered up his Big Baller Brand tattoo and has hinted on social media he could sign an endorsement deal with Nike. Mr. Foster owns 16.3 percent of Big Baller Brand, as do Mr. Ball’s parents LaVar and Tina Ball. 

GATE (academically gifted) students in the district numbered 212 students in 2017-18 and 227 in 2018-19, when the district met its goal of having 10 percent GATE identified among the student population.  The district tests all students in second grade. The program varies among schools.

The gasoline producers are at it again. The fuel price has gone up about 50 cents a gallon during the past two months. The refineries managed to lump fires with summer additives, taxes and other traditional reasons for explaining the seasonal increase of close to 20% at a time that international oil prices are dropping.

Issues of animal rights apparently didn’t bother people back in 1897 as much as scantily attired girls when the Champion editor wrote “Ye gods! The circus man has come and posted the wall across the alley with glaring pictures of giraffes and hippopotami and girls in tights. And crowds of boys (from 5 to 25 years) stand there in a babel of lurid tales of what each has seen in the circus before. They’re boys, all boys, ‘twas ever thus!’ ”
